How Claude API pricing works
The Claude API charges separately for input tokens (your prompt, system prompt, and conversation history) and output tokens (Claude's response). Costs scale linearly — 1M tokens is the pricing unit. For most applications, input tokens dominate because you send context on every request.
Choosing the right model
- Haiku 4.5 — best for classification, routing, simple Q&A, and high-volume pipelines where cost matters most.
- Sonnet 4.6 — best balance of intelligence and cost for most production applications.
- Opus 4.6 — best for complex reasoning, long-form writing, and tasks where quality is more important than cost.
